Toronto Tempo: Canada’s First WNBA Team Is Here

Canada has made basketball history with the announcement of its first-ever WNBA team: the Toronto Tempo. Inspired by the rhythm and energy of the city and the game itself, the team’s identity reflects a connection to the pulse of Toronto, the heartbeat of basketball, and the vibrant culture of Canada.

The name Tempo isn’t just about speed—it’s about control, pace, and progress. It’s the feeling you get walking through Toronto’s dynamic streets or hearing the bounce of a basketball echoing in a packed gym. As Teresa Resch, President of the Toronto Tempo, put it, “Tempo is pace. It’s speed. It’s a heartbeat.” ( While they were doing a contest to find the new name for the team, I really thought I had a chance with the name I gave but for the sake of this article I’ll keep it for myself)

For me, basketball has always been more than a sport—it’s a way of life. Growing up, I wasn’t part of any formal teams, but you could always find me shooting hoops at the local park, soaking in the rhythm of the game. There’s something universal about the sound of sneakers squeaking on the court, the bounce of the ball, and the collective gasp of the crowd when someone nails a clutch shot. That’s why the announcement of the Tempo feels so personal—it’s a reminder of how deeply basketball resonates with people, whether you’re a pro or just playing pick-up games like me.

Sharing Basketball with My Girlfriend

Basketball isn’t just my thing—it’s something I share with my girlfriend. Her journey with the sport is next level—she played through university, pushing through grueling practices and intense tournaments. Her passion for the game inspires me, whether we’re shooting hoops together or watching games.

When we hit the court, it’s not about winning or losing; it’s about sharing a connection. ( Ok I lie, we are super competitive and I love it!) That’s the magic of basketball—it brings people together. And with the Toronto Tempo, Canada now has a new way to connect over the game, on a national and cultural scale.

Experiencing the WNBA Live

Last year, I got a taste of the WNBA’s energy when I attended a game in Toronto. Thanks to an invite from Hennessy, I was lucky enough to witness the league’s talent and intensity in person. Walking into the arena, the atmosphere was electric—fans buzzing, players warming up, and the anticipation of a thrilling game in the air.

The WNBA is more than just basketball. It’s a celebration of skill, passion, and the power of women in sports. Seeing that energy live made me even more excited about the Tempo joining the league. Toronto fans are in for something special when the team starts playing at Coca-Cola Coliseum in 2026.

The Rhythm of Basketball in Toronto

The Toronto Tempo’s name was carefully chosen to reflect not just the game but the city itself. The team’s forward-leaning logo, the inclusion of fans as the "sixth player," and the bilingual branding show a commitment to inclusivity and progress. It’s more than a name—it’s an identity that connects fans across the country.

Personally, basketball has always been about rhythm—the back-and-forth of the game, the moments of calm before the storm. That’s why the Tempo feels so right for Toronto. It captures the city’s pulse and the energy of the game we love.

Whether you’re a die-hard fan or just starting to get into basketball, there’s never been a better time to embrace the sport. The Tempo is here to inspire a new generation of players and fans, reminding us all that basketball is more than just a game—it’s a culture, a connection, and a way of life.

As for me? I’ll be rocking my Tempo gear and continuing to share the game with the people I love. Because whether you’re watching a pro game or playing pick-up with friends, basketball is all about finding your rhythm and keeping the beat alive.
