Instagram: 3 Important Metrics Over Followers and Likes

Since I left my day job, I strive to be the best digital strategist and consultant for businesses. However,  I noticed that most businesses put their focus on the wrong metrics. In fact, when people talk about their social media, they often point out the number of followers they have and their number of likes; two things that can be bought for cheap! However, I am not saying that these numbers are not important, I am simply bringing up that these numbers shouldn’t be on top of your list in 2018.


Before we get into Instagram’s key performance indicators (KPI), in order to measure all this, you must have an Instagram Business Profile. If you do not have one and wish to know how to do it, check out this article. If you have a business profile, you can keep track of these numbers by clicking on the 4 vertical bars on top right when you are on your Instagram Profile.



Reach is the total number of unique accounts that have seen any of your posts. This number is more important than your numbers of followers because, in fact, this is the number of people that actually see your posts. With Instagram Algorithm causing headache to social media influencers and small businesses, it is important to put your effort on other metrics that you can ”control” more. The goal is to increase your reach, weeks after weeks and for myself, I have a greater reach than the amount of Instagram Followers itself on my personal account @iamSteveDaniel!

Here’s 3 ways to increase your reach;

  1.  Tag your location in your stories! (Your story might get in the Location Stories and get viewed by other people)
  2. Put relevant # in your stories ( Same as location but for this time, it will get in # Public Stories)
  3. Collaboration with friends. When they tag you, their friends will look at your profile and increase your reach.




The impression is the number of times your posts have been seen. This metric is important because your goal is to be in front of your audience. If your reach is somewhat equal to your impressions, it means that people only see you once a week. Increasing your impressions is good because not only you are more present for your community, but it also means that you will increase your chance to not disappear into the unknown with the new Instagram Algorithm. In fact, Instagram only shows your content to about 30% of your followers and if you create more, you get seen more. (Obvious, I know) To increase your impressions, here’s 1 simple trick:

  1. DO MORE. Stories and Posts! It’s Simple

Watch that number increase weeks after weeks!




Instagram for Business offers you the option to add your number, address, website, and email to direct your Instagram Visitors to YOU. Why is it important? Because it shows interest! Personally, 10 Email Clicks have more values for me than 100 likes on a picture. If you are a business owner, you should focus on increasing that numbers because it often results in money in your pockets. Unfortunately, these metrics are a bit harder to increase over time than the Reach and Impressions because it demands a strategy and consistency. However, here’s 2 personal tips that will help you increase these numbers;

  1. Write Call to Action in your caption such as Call Us Today, Visit Us, Email Us if you have questions and more.
  2. Call to Action in your Instagram Stories such as ”Click Link in Bio for more” this works really well for me!


Now that you see these 3 metrics that you should focus over getting followers and likes, I can guarantee to you that after a couple of weeks, if you increase your Reach, your Impressions and your Call To Action Clicks, you will increase your number of followers but also get more opportunities. How To Use Instagram Stories Highlights Feature

Last week, Instagram introduced two new features that are quite interesting for Instagram Stories Lover like me. You can now archive all of your Instagram Stories and you can also share them directly on a new section on your profile called the Highlight sections. At first, I was not too sure about the goal of that extra feature until I understand how you can truly use the Instagram Stories Highlights to your advantage.

However,  I would like to add that this feature reminds me a lot of Swishlinks Feature with the exact same name where you could save different stories or collection as highlights to be the first thing that the visitors see when they look at your profile… coincidence? Who knows?

There’s two ways to save an Instagram Stories Highlights.

The first way to do it is pretty straightforward. The stories highlights feature only work after you have posted your story. When you upload your story, you can go back to it and you will see a heart in the bottom right, this is the new Instagram Stories Highlights button. When you click on it, you can decide to save your story in a new highlight and this will be on your profile.

The second way is from your profile. Under your description you will see a ”+ New” Sign, when you click on it, you will see all the stories that you have created since the new update came out and you can decide which one you would like to what Instagram Highlights.

Personally, I feel that this is perfect for businesses, because you can categorize the different services and products that you have. Per example, if you are a bakery, you could do different Instagram Stories Highlights to showcase your bread, your snacks, your specialities and more! In addition, you can name your Instagram Highlights so you can be sure to get the visitors attention right away.

As for me, I plan to use the Instagram Stories Highlights to promote my vlogs, stop-motions, my travel memories that didn’t make the cut for my Instagram Feed and other projects. What about you, what do you plan to use the Instagram Highlights for?

How to Succeed on Social Media – Tips from 4 Content Creators

I created this website to share with you all the tips and tricks on how to succeed online. As a digital marketer, I like to think that I know it all but I have been doing this full time for few years now.  The questions that people often asks are How do I get more followers? How do I succeed online? How can I be Instagram Famous? I personally have my own strategies and ideas but for this article, I reached out to 4 different content creators that I admire and that I personally met to ask them a tip or two on how to succeed on social media. See what they have to say below!


Roxanne West

I met Roxanne West in Halifax and we instantly became good friends (maybe because her last name is West.. what’s up Craig!) We were both there to do a road trip from Moncton to Halifax! Roxanne is a content creator and a home renovator! She’s super dynamic and energetic, she’s a full time blogger and mommy that probably have 40 hours in her day!

When I asked her about a tip to succeed as a content creator she said that ”you need to put the time in to get results and be consistent in your posting and engaging with your audience too. Keep a professional imagery, Instagram is image based- treat it like your store front!” She has been doing it for 10 years now and her hard work paid off where she definitely have one of the coolest lifestyle.

When taking a look at Roxanne’s Instagram, you see it right away in the quality of her pictures and she engages with her audience all the time. I highly suggest to keep an eye on her because she has amazing projects coming up and who knows, maybe she will be in my vlog when I will be in Toronto next month! Marcus Troy

I met Marcus Troy randomly after a Kendrick Lamar’s concert in Montreal. He was walking and I came up to him and said ”What’s Up Marcus”! I’ve been following him for a while on Instagram and he’s definitely a content creator that I enjoy seeing succeed. He was featured in Forbes Magazine as ”being one of the first tastemakers to ignite the blogging boom of the early 2000’s’‘.

When I asked him to give me a tip that could help people to succeed online, he answered ”Always have a unique point of view”.

Personally, I notice lots of people trying to replicate formulas and content that work for others instead of being unique, they become a copy-cat. By giving the tip of having an unique point of view, you become different and you bring something to the table that others don’t.

Joëlle Anello

I met Joëlle Anello at Le Melbourne Cafe during a breakfast meet up that my friend Jessica invited me to. When I met her, she had recently quit her day job to becoming a full-time blogger and since then, she seems to be killing it.

Last week, she was sharing some knowledge on Instagram (or maybe making a rant..) about how to succeed on IG and her tips are perfect for this article. ”To make it work on social media, post great content (at least once a day), like and comment relevantly on accounts that truly inspire you and repeat that!” 

I personally don’t post everyday but I did see  results when I was doing some daily engagement. Some people might find that hard to post everyday on Instagram but if you look at Joëlle Anello’s Instagram, not only she post everyday, all her pictures have pink in them! I personally never saw that much pink in my life before looking at Joëlle’s feed. (and her friend Sabrina as well!)  Josiane Konaté

I met Josiane Konaté at le Melbourne Café as well during the breakfast meet up. As we didn’t speak much that day, I still followed her on Instagram because I am a fan of her aesthetic.

When I asked her some tips on how to succeed as a content creator and on social media she came back with 4 great tips!

  1. Be Authentic: stay true to yourself
  2. Be passionate about what you do! People will notice and relate.
  3. Be Patient: good things take time, so does succeeding on social media. Be consistent with sharing amazing content.
  4. Be there for your audience: they take the time to like and comment on your posts. Do the same, engage with them.

As some of her tips are similar to what the others have said, if there’s one thing that Josiane Konaté definitely demonstrates alot is her passion for what she does. She loves fashion so much that she recently launched her own business Maison Petite Bold, a vibrant handcrafted ethnic goods that meets minimal art. 7 Ways To Create Better Instagram Stories

Since Instagram Stories rolled out as a feature, it became a game changer for all their users but also a good way to crush Snapchat by slowing their growth by 82% after Instagram Stories launched. However, this feature became my best friend and got me noticed by different brand and medias.

In July, I was  featured in Narcity Québec as one of the 28 Instagram accounts to follow because of their InstaStories. Instagram Stories are the best way to keep your followers engage with you, keep them on the loop of what is going on, increase your reach (when you tag your locations) and to be creative on a daily basis! By doing more Instagram Stories, you will definitely see an increase in your statistics, no need to take tab of it by yourself, you can use the tools that are already available for you to keep track of it that I mentioned in my 3 ways to get Instagram Insights .  I have been using Instagram stories since the day it got launched and it has been a great success in increasing my followers and my engagement. Here’s 5 ways to step your Instagram Stories game up.

1 – Give a soundtrack to your Instagram stories

You don’t need to always talk in your story, it could be a nice picture of your current views, a boomerang of you in action or simply a video of what you are up to. Adding music to your Instagram Stories will make it more fun and original. To do so, there’s 2 ways that I mainly use. The first way is with Spotify on the phone. While recording your story, play a song on Spotify in the back and it will be part of your Instagram Story sound. The second way also requires another application where you will edit your video within it. The name of the app is HYPE TYPE, Hype Type lets you add any song that are available on the Itunes Store to your video.

e.g. Skateboarding at night with the song Ridin’ by Chamillionaire. 

2 – Step up the look of your Instagram Stories

Instagram Filters are good but changing the look to something even more original such as cinematic film, VHS look and more with the app I recently discovered called SNOW is a game changer. Snow is a free-app that seems to be a social network like Snapchat but you can edit your videos in the app and save them on your phone to upload them on your Instagram Story. You can also add moving text with the app I mentioned before HYPE TYPE.

3 – Energy

”Your vibe attracts your tribe”. Energy is important when doing an Instagram Story because you only have 3 seconds to get someone attention before he swipes to the next. (Sometimes, even less) . In order to have better energy, you have to believe in yourself as a public speaker and own it.

4 – Quality Content

No one likes to see a pixelated photo or video when they swipe in their Instagram Stories. A quality image get noticed right away and I will be honest with you, you will get better quality if you capture your content outside of the Instagram App. I personally use the Iphone Camera Depth function to take quality image or my Canon G7X Mark II for pictures and videos. The quality is undeniably good and my followers often reply to my story to compliment my photo or to ask me how I was able to take such a beautiful pictures.

5 – Engage with your audience

lnstagram just launched their new stories feature: the Poll. This is the best way to engage with your audience by asking them questions and having them answer between two choices.

6 – Canva is your best friend

The more creative you are, the more you will get noticed. I highly suggest using Canva App if you want to share quotes, promotions and . What I like about this app is that it is easy to use and have over 100 templates for you to create unique Instagram Stories. I currently used it to promote my social media workshop that I will teach at the end of the month of October.

7 – Create Epic Transitions

From one place to another, transitions are definitely one of the main reasons I would highly suggest you to follow me on Instagram (@IamSteveDaniel). The transitions I use on my Instagram does require a little bit of editing and I can’t really explain it by text but use your creativity to create your own transitions. I am currently thinking about making a Youtube video to show you how I create my Epic transitions. Should I?

3 Ways To Get Instagram Insights

As a Digital Marketer for over 2 years now, I usually tend to focus my B2C marketing strategies on Facebook and Instagram. However, for marketing, Instagram remains my favorite platform and in order to be successful on it, you have to be able to measure your efforts. Here’s 3 tools that I would suggest to all of you to get more insights and get analytics on your Instagram.


This website is a website that I go on once a month to be sure that I am on track. With this website, I am able to see some of the analytics that matters the most for me such as the number of engagement per posts, the number of likes, the engagement per time I posted, etc. The most important feature of this website is that it tracks your engagement over time, my goal is to keep increasing my numbers over time and I use that website just to know if I am doing good.

A Business Profile on Instagram.Com

This is important for businesses. When you look into the insight of Instagram, you have access to see the number of impressions, reach, engagement, how many people clicked on your website. I look at it everyday and it keeps me on track in order to see the engagement rate per posts. It is really important for me to keep an engagement rate (number of engagement/number of reach) over 15% for my clients so that I know that the content that is being posted is good. In addition, my goal is to get conversion such as click on directions, clicks on the number (to either call or text) and to get followers that fit my target demographic.

This website is the one I use to spy on my competition. On that website, you get a report on your followers and your following. While focuses only on Instagram accounts that you can provide a password, on Social Blade you can add a user name on their database and they will give you the report on them as well. It is a great tool to see if you have a better growth than your competition, how active they are on their Instagram. Another option that I love about social blade, they give a projection according to your growth on the amount of followers you will get in 30 days, 3 months, 6 months and more from today and also if care more about your numbers, it will tell you how long it will take you to get to 5K followers, 10K followers and more. As I may know that there’s way more other platforms out there to help you with Instagram Insight, I just want to point that these tools are the one I use the most for my business.
