Instagram: 3 Important Metrics Over Followers and Likes

Since I left my day job, I strive to be the best digital strategist and consultant for businesses. However,  I noticed that most businesses put their focus on the wrong metrics. In fact, when people talk about their social media, they often point out the number of followers they have and their number of likes; two things that can be bought for cheap! However, I am not saying that these numbers are not important, I am simply bringing up that these numbers shouldn’t be on top of your list in 2018.

Before we get into Instagram’s key performance indicators (KPI), in order to measure all this, you must have an Instagram Business Profile. If you do not have one and wish to know how to do it, check out this article. If you have a business profile, you can keep track of these numbers by clicking on the 4 vertical bars on top right when you are on your Instagram Profile.

Reach is the total number of unique accounts that have seen any of your posts. This number is more important than your numbers of followers because, in fact, this is the number of people that actually see your posts. With Instagram Algorithm causing headache to social media influencers and small businesses, it is important to put your effort on other metrics that you can ”control” more. The goal is to increase your reach, weeks after weeks and for myself, I have a greater reach than the amount of Instagram Followers itself on my personal account @iamSteveDaniel!

Here’s 3 ways to increase your reach;

  1.  Tag your location in your stories! (Your story might get in the Location Stories and get viewed by other people)
  2. Put relevant # in your stories ( Same as location but for this time, it will get in # Public Stories)
  3. Collaboration with friends. When they tag you, their friends will look at your profile and increase your reach.

The impression is the number of times your posts have been seen. This metric is important because your goal is to be in front of your audience. If your reach is somewhat equal to your impressions, it means that people only see you once a week. Increasing your impressions is good because not only you are more present for your community, but it also means that you will increase your chance to not disappear into the unknown with the new Instagram Algorithm. In fact, Instagram only shows your content to about 30% of your followers and if you create more, you get seen more. (Obvious, I know) To increase your impressions, here’s 1 simple trick:

  1. DO MORE. Stories and Posts! It’s Simple

Watch that number increase weeks after weeks!

Instagram for Business offers you the option to add your number, address, website, and email to direct your Instagram Visitors to YOU. Why is it important? Because it shows interest! Personally, 10 Email Clicks have more values for me than 100 likes on a picture. If you are a business owner, you should focus on increasing that numbers because it often results in money in your pockets. Unfortunately, these metrics are a bit harder to increase over time than the Reach and Impressions because it demands a strategy and consistency. However, here’s 2 personal tips that will help you increase these numbers;

  1. Write Call to Action in your caption such as Call Us Today, Visit Us, Email Us if you have questions and more.
  2. Call to Action in your Instagram Stories such as ”Click Link in Bio for more” this works really well for me!

Now that you see these 3 metrics that you should focus over getting followers and likes, I can guarantee to you that after a couple of weeks, if you increase your Reach, your Impressions and your Call To Action Clicks, you will increase your number of followers but also get more opportunities. Now go out there and make it happen and let me know how it goes, if you have any questions, I am just one click away!

EASYFLASH: Pay A Photographer For The Photos You Love

When it comes to photography, I do enjoy taking pictures of my friends but I have to admit that it is not all of them that knows how to take pictures of me. I don’t have a go-to photographer that I use for my content, instead, I hang out with different people and decide to post online the pictures that I like the most. However, there’s one thing that most of my pictures have in common, they are candid and on the moment. I am not a good model and I want my pictures to look as authentic as it can be. Two weeks ago, I got approached by EASYFLASH, a new service that offers a free photoshoot and you only pay for the pictures that you want to keep. The pictures that came out of this photoshoot were amazing and you should give it a try.

How does EASYFLASH works?

How does it work you may ask? It is quite simple, you go on their website and you book a free photoshoot with one of their photographers; you can book one for solo, family, friends, events and more. (even boudoir, THAT’S IT). Then, they meet you, and in my situation, we met downtown and the photographer decided the different locations and help me with the pauses. Finally, they send you an email with all your pictures and you can decide the how many you want to keep and you only pay for the pictures that you want to take. The photographer that I had, Simon, was pretty friendly and you can get pictures from him between 5-7$ a photo depending on how many you decide to get! That’s really not expensive and the quality of the pictures he took for me was amazing, see below!

How It Went Down

Personally, my experience was quite simple and efficient. The photographer was on time at Peel Metro and from there we walked to an alley few blocks away where we took the first shots. My mistake was that I didn’t bring alternative outfit so the only things I could showcase was my Carpe Diem Glasses, my Caracara Ookpik Jacket, my Timberland 6” Premium Waterproof Boots, my G-Star D-Staq 3D superslim jeans and a simple Calvin Klein black tee. I have to admit, we didn’t choose the best day to do this, it was REALLY COLD (-15ºC) my hands were freezing. After, we headed toward to the Sun Life building as the second location. The photographer knew exactly where he wanted to take the pictures and we finished at the Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral. The whole shoot lasted one hour!

I received my pictures 2 days later and out of the 59 pictures that I’ve received, I love 54 of them! Now it is your turn to give EasyFlash a try, head over their website and book your photographer today and let me know what you think about it!

Guest Post with Random Cuisine: Central Chinese Cuisine and Asian Desserts

China is huge. Many non-Asians will generalize Chinese cuisine as one entire cuisine. In fact, Chinese cuisine is very rich and diverse. The ingredients and styles of cooking vary depending on the geography, climate, and religion. As a rule of thumb, Southern China focuses on bringing out the freshness and natural flavours of seafood, meat and vegetables. Central China is famous for its use of spices particularly the numbing and spicy characteristics.  Northern China is known for its wheat abundance so noodles and baos are prominent.

In this food extravaganza, Steve and I explored central Chinese cuisine at Aunt Dai at their new location in downtown on rue St-Mathieu.  One cuisine that many foreigners know and love is the bold and pungent flavours of Sichuan cuisine. This cuisine is best defined for its málà (numbing and spicy) characteristics. To experience true Sichuan flavours, you must order these dishes:

‘Mouthwatering chicken (kou shui ji)‘ – cold poached chicken served with Szechuan chili sauce. Not only the sauce is spicy, it has a balance of salty, sweet, vinegary and numbing flavours

Dry fried green beans – it might look like simple strands of green beans, but once you bite into it. It is packed with umami flavours with the smokiness of wok hei (essence of the wok).

Fish in Chili Oil – Fresh slices of tilapia cooked in an aromatic chili broth. This is a true representative of the numbing and spicy flavour of Sichuan cuisine. It is loaded with chili peppers and Szechuan peppercorns. To add some freshness to this dish, it is loaded with bean sprouts. You only need to eat the fishes and bean sprouts. No need to eat the peppers unless you feel adventurous.

Other dishes that we recommend ordering are the cumin beef, ma po tofu and Sichuan cabbage stir fry.

Aunt Dai also serves dishes from other parts of China. Red-cooked pork belly (hong shao rou) is one popular dish throughout mainland China. It is pork belly cooked in soy sauce, ginger, garlic and aromatic spices until it is tender and melts in your mouth. This is served in a claypot with Korean sweet potato noodles.

After eating all this spicy food, dairy is the solution to cool our palate down. We went to Zoe’s Dessert et Thé, a block from Aunt Dai. East Asian desserts are rarely considered as sweet. It is rich in fruits, legumes, spices and tea.

On the left, we order their ‘injelmo bingsoo’ – Korean shaved milk, sweet rice cakes (mini mochi), cornflakes, sweet red bean paste and almonds.

On the right is a popular modern Hong Kong dessert called ‘mango pomelo sago’ – a cold mango soup served with diced mango, pomelo (Asian grapefruit but not sour), and tapioca peebles.

Discovering Antigua, Guatemala: 5 Places To See

Last week, my friends and I travelled to Guatemala for a week. This country located in Central America is beautiful and to start our journey there, we did a stop at Antigua, Guatemala. This small city is surrounded by volcanoes. Renowned for its Spanish colonial buildings, Antigua is a city with beautiful architecture that got restored following an earthquake in 1773. If you plan to go to Antigua, Guatemala, here’s a list of 5 things that you should go see!

Santa Catalina Arch, Free

Santa Catalina Arch, Antigua

The Santa Catalina Arch in Antigua, Guatemala

Located in the middle of the city, the Santa Catalina Arch is one of the main landmark that you should go see once in Antigua. Built in 1964, this arch used to be a tunnel between two convents: the Covent of the Virgin and the Covent of Santa Catalina. Few years later, one side remained a convent while the other side became a school. The nuns living in the convents had taken vows to remain secluded and to avoid all contact with the outside world, the tunnel became their only way to cross one side to the other. Personally, the arch is beautiful to see in person and when there’s no cloud in the sky, you can capture the perfect shot of looking down the street and capture the arch and the Volcàn de Agua.

In the picture I took, I was not lucky because there was some clouds on the volcano which kinda ruined the perfect shot. Nevertheless, the Santa Catalina Arch is BEAUTIFUL and must be visited when in Antigua.

The Plaza Central Park, Free

The name says it, the Plaza is located in the center of the city and this park is beautiful. However, this town square is the place where you will get approach by locals trying to sell you different things such as flutes, necklaces, tam-tams and more! NEVER ACCEPT THE FIRST PRICE THEY OFFER. One thing I’ve learned in Antigua, Guatemala (and you will see it in the vlog above) is that they are open for negotiations and you can easily reduce the price by 70%. What I enjoyed from the Central Park is that it is surrounded by municipal buildings, cafes, cathedral and more. One of the historic sites surrounding the Central Park is the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales.

Acatenango Volcano, 120$

Named the #1 thing to do in Antigua, the hike of the Acatenango Volcano was something that we did not had time to do when we were in Guatemala. This hike takes about 5-6 hours and it is not an easy one! Most travellers decide to do this hike over two days so that they can enjoy the sunset and the sunrise. If you are planning to go to Antigua, Guatemala and would love to do this hike, here’s 5 quick tips that you need to take into consideration for this hike (as well any other hike that you are planning to do there)

  • Wear proper hiking shoes. Don’t be a fool and try to hike with converse or Air Forces, having the proper hiking shoes will make the difference on the hike, and also, you won’t ruin your favorite shoes!
  • Bring water, lots of water! Other blogs recommend to bring at least 4 litres of water per person, I would listen to them. It is better to bring more than not enough.
  • Only bring what you need. Do not bring your laptop, or the extra pair of shoes you think you might need. Try to pack light because you will regret every extra grams that was not necessary during the hike.
  • Stay in your lane! While you are going up, there will be other Guatemalan walking past you and you need to understand that it is not a race. Take your time and take breaks if you need to!
  • Sunscreen and aspirin! It is not because you are higher and it is colder than you will not get sun burnt. Bring sunscreen and aspirin will be needed once you get this high since you may suffer from altitude sickness.

Iglesia de la Merced, Free

Less than 10 minutes walk away from Central Park, there’s the Iglesia de la Merced which means  The Church of the Mercy. This church got destroyed twice by earthquakes and was rebuilt several times to be able to stay strong if another earthquake occurs. In addition, it has a lovely yellow façade and a huge stone fountain, known to be the largest in Central America.

The Street Market, that is up to you!

The street market was one of my favorite place to visit during our time in Antigua. (maybe because a tourist called me Lil Wayne?) You can find everything on the market, food, clothes, watches and more. I didn’t see lots of tourist there but I loved the energy that was present. This place is HUGE (as you can notice in my Antigua Vlog) and this is where you can put your negotiation skills to test.

While there’s other things to visit and see when you in Antigua, Guatemala, I would love for you to send me a message about what is your favorite attraction there. I am planning to go back and stay a bit longer this time ( I think I fell in love with Antigua) and be sure to not miss my Vlog Series in Guatemala that is available on my Youtube Channel by clicking here.

The Art of Setting S.M.A.R.T. Resolutions

New year is around the corner and this is the time to set up a fresh start. While I am not too big on New Year resolutions, I am more of a goal setter and I want to share an ideology I’ve been using personally. When I was in Unversity (or maybe Cegep) I learnt about the concept of S.M.A.R.T. goal and I think this is the best way for all of us to dictate our New Year resolutions.

That being said, what is S.M.A.R.T. goals? S.M.A.R.T. is an acronym to help you remember how to set a goal for yourself. (I am personally a big fan of acronym when it comes to remember key concepts such as F.E.A.R. when it comes to networking! ) In fact, S.M.A.R.T. stands for : Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-Bound. In this article, I will share with you how to set better goals that will be clear and reachable for you.

The first thing to consider when you want to set a goal or resolution, it has to be. The more specific your goal is, the more realistic and the easier it will be for you to focus on it. You can ask yourself questions such as what exactly you want to achieve, how you want to achieve it and know your WHY! While knowing your why can be an article by itself, knowing your WHY when you set your resolution will help you stay motivated.

A good resolution has to be measurable. Don’t just say that ”this year I want to lose weight”; you should rather say ” this year I want to lose 15 pounds” per example. When your goal is measurable, it is trackable and there is also an end-point to it.

Is your resolution achievable? Are you staying in your lane? You should always be able to visualize you reaching your goal and completing your resolution but do not lie to yourself, is your goal achievable at the end of the day. I suggest setting goal that you have all the control over it such as ” I will save 50$ every week” versus ”I will get a promotion that will give me 50$ every week for me to save”. In the second example, your ”faith” depends on someone else and this is not motivating.

Is your resolution important for you? Don’t set a resolution because it is trendy, set something that goes in line with your WHY. When asking yourself if your goal is relevant, you should be able to know if your goal will help you, are you able to make it happen and most importantly, does it make sense for you to put your focus on it. If you are able to answer yes to all these questions, you are definitely on your way to set a S.M.A.R.T. resolution!

How long are you giving yourself? I remember giving myself a year when I would set up New Year resolutions. I will be honest with you, I was not always successful at them. In fact, I would fail them miserably. I started seeing success in my New Year resolutions when I started breaking down my goal in a shorter time such as 1 month resolution, 3 months resolution and so on.

Now that you know how to set a S.M.A.R.T. resolution, I am curious to know, what are your resolutions for 2018? Stay on the lookout because on January 1st, I will share with you my 10 S.M.A.R.T. resolutions.

Christmas is Coming! 5 Gifts Idea for Him!

Christmas is less than 2 weeks away and I have decided to write a list of 5 great gift ideas for him! (In addition, above you can see the video I did for Snapgrab with 5 other ideas!) I feel that I am in a good position to share with you all what a men wants and if you are not sure about what I have to say, head straight to the end of this blog to see other gift guides from my favorite bloggers.

1 – Manicure and Pedicure

Yes! I am telling you, getting a manicure and pedicure for the men in your life is a must. Couple of months ago, I wrote an article and made a vlog about my experience at Mantelier. Located in the Old Port of Montreal, Mantelier offers an unique experience for men providing hair and shave services, but most importantly, hands and feet treatment.

2 – Books! (Tai Lopez was right)

You remember the old Tai Lopez commercial talking about how he got his nice cars? This year, I have some books that will be a great gift for him!

Bossing Up from my friend Samantha Kris should be on top of your list! In this book, Samantha shares how she earned her 5 promotions in 5 years. In addition, this book is a game changer helping you understand your success stoppers, boost your emotional intelligence, discovering a new way of setting and achieving goals and more! The book is available on Amazon, you can click here to order yours today.

In addition, I would like to share more books that are great gift for him such as

3 – Google Home or Alexia

Now that we probably all have smartphones, it is time to turn our house smart. Google and Amazon have great home assistant that basically help you get answers, entertains you and help you control your home with your voice. In addition, you can now have the Google Mini for 50$! This is a great gift because it is something that will help him with his time and his career!

4 – Quality Boxers and Socks!

Last month, I took over a new client that sells boxers, Mr Boxer Shop located in the Fairview Pointe Claire Mall. (Shameless Plug). It might sound weird but quality boxers are actually a great gift. Without being an expert in the field, last month I had the chance to try out different upscale brand of boxers such as Saxx, My Pakage and more and I can feel the quality and I definitely want more boxers. In addition, without getting too technical, most of these boxers are made differently from what you are used too see, having a different pocket inside to give the best comfort for his package. When it comes to socks, this is in right now in Fashion, some nice socks to complement the outfit is always a great gift.

5 – Accessories

Men love accessories such as watch and wallets. Personally, I would suggest to get him a wallet from my friend at Lajoie. This summer I did a vlog that showcases the behind the scene at Lajoie, you can see it here! Lajoie makes high-end leather accessories and every product is hand stitched from some of the highest quality leather available anywhere in the world! They recently released their new collection ”Gone By Midnight”, you can see it here.

This was my 5 gifts idea for him! Next week I will write about the 5 gift ideas for her. If you would like to get more inspiration, do not hesitate to head over different articles from my favorite bloggers.

New Project Alert!!! Je Snack with Cyusa!

Today is a great day (well, no, 2 weeks ago was a great day), my friend Cyusa and I decided that it was time for us to team up on a french show to do something different, something that unites us… something funny. I am happy to present to you the JE SNACK show.

The goal of Je Snack is to try different snacks (obviously!) and share to the public what we think about them. The idea initially came from Cyusa, he called me and said ”Steve! I have an idea, we should do snack testing!”. I will be honest, at first, I was not sure about that idea, when it comes to snacks, I am basic: Chips and Chocolate. But then, I went to see my client Marche Via and I realized right away that they have LOTS of snacks and the place looked good so not only we can start doing our show with their products, we can film it there directly. I called Cyusa and told him to come check it out and that’s it, we have our show.

The first video was released yesterday on our new Youtube page: Je Filme. In the first video, we try different chips and we have a special guest, Danielle! Go check the video above or click here!

Enjoy and do not hesitate to tell us what we should try next in the comments below.

How To Use Instagram Stories Highlights Feature

Last week, Instagram introduced two new features that are quite interesting for Instagram Stories Lover like me. You can now archive all of your Instagram Stories and you can also share them directly on a new section on your profile called the Highlight sections. At first, I was not too sure about the goal of that extra feature until I understand how you can truly use the Instagram Stories Highlights to your advantage.

However,  I would like to add that this feature reminds me a lot of Swishlinks Feature with the exact same name where you could save different stories or collection as highlights to be the first thing that the visitors see when they look at your profile… coincidence? Who knows?

There’s two ways to save an Instagram Stories Highlights.

The first way to do it is pretty straightforward. The stories highlights feature only work after you have posted your story. When you upload your story, you can go back to it and you will see a heart in the bottom right, this is the new Instagram Stories Highlights button. When you click on it, you can decide to save your story in a new highlight and this will be on your profile.

The second way is from your profile. Under your description you will see a ”+ New” Sign, when you click on it, you will see all the stories that you have created since the new update came out and you can decide which one you would like to what Instagram Highlights.

Personally, I feel that this is perfect for businesses, because you can categorize the different services and products that you have. Per example, if you are a bakery, you could do different Instagram Stories Highlights to showcase your bread, your snacks, your specialities and more! In addition, you can name your Instagram Highlights so you can be sure to get the visitors attention right away.

As for me, I plan to use the Instagram Stories Highlights to promote my vlogs, stop-motions, my travel memories that didn’t make the cut for my Instagram Feed and other projects. What about you, what do you plan to use the Instagram Highlights for?

For additional information about this new update, feel free to go to Instagram Press Page here!
